Not-for-profit organizations are an integral part of our communities and lives, and boards of directors are the executive bodies that govern these organizations. Accountable to the stakeholders of its organization, a board works to fulfill the organization’s purpose and is the final policy and decision-making authority for the organization. The overarching duty of board members is to govern the organization with a commitment to act in the best interests of the stakeholders and to leave the organization stronger than they found it. Ultimately, it is the board’s responsibility to ensure excellence in governance.

 

The primary goal of this publication is to assist agencies in expanding their impact, as well as to equip community leaders willing to serve their chosen agency with confidence.  The authors have combined over a century’s worth of experience in board governance to offer a guide for the Not-for-Profit boards of the future.
